Communication Studies
Welcome, and thank you for visiting my ePortfolio!
I am a recent graduate of The University of Alabama with a degree in Communication Studies. My academic and professional journey has shaped me into a confident, strategic, and inclusive communicator, equipped to thrive in diverse environments. Studying communication has enabled me to master essential concepts and develop competencies that are applicable to real-world professional settings. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the knowledge and skills I’ve gained—skills that have prepared me not only academically and professionally, but also personally, by improving how I relate to others and view the world. Growing up in a small town in Alabama gave me a close-knit and comfortable upbringing, but it also limited my exposure to different worldviews. My time at The University of Alabama expanded my perspective dramatically. Through coursework and connections with students from diverse backgrounds, I’ve come to recognize and appreciate multiple valid perspectives. This experience has taught me to communicate more thoughtfully, to consider how my words and actions impact others, and to make meaningful contributions to something greater than myself. In courses such as Public Speaking and Business and Professional Communication, I delivered persuasive, informative, and elevator speeches, conducted mock interviews, and practiced nonverbal communication strategies like tone and body language. These classes gave me confidence in oral communication and taught me to adapt messages effectively for different audiences. In Human Communication Research and Truths, Ethics, and Deception, I explored theories like social exchange and truth-default, wrote research proposals, and analyzed ethical dilemmas—honing my written communication and critical thinking.Courses like Family Communication and Organizational Communication helped me understand how relationships and systems function, giving me tools for conflict resolution, active listening, and emotional intelligence. I now prioritize honest, respectful, and empathetic communication in both personal and professional settings. In Intercultural Communication, I developed cultural sensitivity and inclusive messaging through presentations, self-reflection, and applied theory—skills that continue to influence how I collaborate and lead. My academic foundation has been strengthened further by professional experience as an independent sales contractor, where I practiced ethical persuasion, client engagement, and clear messaging daily. These experiences have shown me that communication isn’t just a skill—it’s a mindset. It’s how we build relationships, navigate differences, and create change. The University of Alabama has truly given me an invaluable perspective that has stretched beyond myself. It has cast my own life into a new view, broadened my understanding of how and why people interact the way they do, and reshaped the way I see myself and others in a diverse society. I will carry these communication skills with me as I pursue a meaningful career, especially in roles where thoughtful, effective, and inclusive communication is essential.

My Communication Highlights
-
Through courses like Public Speaking, Business and Professional Communication, Human Communication Research, and Truths, Ethics, and Deception, I developed strong oral and written communication skills. I applied audience adaptation theory, communication competence, social exchange theory, and truth default theory to real-world tasks—from delivering persuasive speeches and conducting interviews to writing research proposals and analyzing ethical dilemmas. These experiences strengthened my ability to communicate with clarity, empathy, and professionalism in both spoken and written formats. I now feel confident tailoring messages for diverse audiences, whether presenting in front of a group, writing reports, or leading professional conversations. These skills shape how I lead, collaborate, and contribute across any field I pursue.
-
In Family Communication and Organizational Communication, I explored how healthy relationships are shaped through systems and communication. Using family systems theory and general systems theory, I learned how individuals and groups function as interconnected parts of a larger whole. I developed skills in active listening, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and relationship building. In COM 330, I interviewed a family member and analyzed relational dynamics, while in COM 350, I researched how communication affects organizational performance. These experiences helped me understand how to foster respectful, empathetic, and supportive interactions. I apply these skills in both personal and professional settings by adapting to different relationship types and prioritizing honest, effective communication.
-
Through Intercultural Communication and Business and Professional Communication, I developed practical communication skills that extend beyond the classroom and into real-world professional settings. By applying intercultural communication theory and social exchange theory, I learned how cultural values and perceptions shape interactions and how people make relationship decisions. I gained experience in cultural sensitivity, inclusive messaging, and cross-cultural collaboration. In COM 465, I created a cultural identity collage and delivered a 15-minute presentation on workplace diversity. In COM 352, I participated in mock interviews and professional communication exercises. These experiences deepened my self-awareness and taught me how to adapt my communication style for different audiences. I use these skills to succeed in interviews, build professional relationships, and lead with clarity and respect in diverse environments.
Capstone Project
My Capstone Project centers on three key maps: the Curriculum Map, Professional Map, and the final Map Merge. Through the Curriculum Map, I identified how my Communication Studies coursework helped me develop essential skills, theories, and experiences. The Professional Map allowed me to explore my personal strengths, career interests, and long-term goals. Finally, the Map Merge brought these two areas together—showing how my academic journey directly supports my professional aspirations. This process helped me clearly see how my education prepared me for real-world communication challenges and gave me direction for continued growth. These maps serve as both a reflection of where I’ve been and a roadmap for where I’m headed next.

Research
Capstone Project
From this project, I came up with a research question: How does effective client communication influence customer satisfaction and referrals in construction from building homes while also growing a roofing businesses?
I would use Expectancy Violations Theory to guide the study. I could collect data through surveys, interviews, and customer reviews.
I might find that good communication leads to higher satisfaction and more referrals, while poor communication can hurt the business.
Doing research like this would help me improve my communication strategies and grow the family business in a smart, professional way.
